D&D 5e Magic Item Creator

Anything from a common torch to an artifact that argues with its wielder.

A free homebrew item builder for D&D 5e. Start from a base weapon or a suit of armour, or from nothing at all, and write the item you actually want: a rarity from common to artifact, charges and how they come back, whether it needs attunement and by whom, what it does to armour class or attack rolls, and whether it is cursed, sentient, or both. Every field the published items use is here, and none of them are hidden from you because the tool decided what sort of item you were making.

Questions people actually ask

What counts as a common magic item?

Common items are the ones that change a scene without changing a fight: a cloak that is always dry, a candle that burns underwater, a mug that chills what you pour into it. If it adds a number to a d20 roll, it is probably uncommon or better.

How many charges should my item have?

Published items cluster around three, seven and ten, and the ones with ten almost always regain 1d6 + 4 at dawn. The number matters less than the recharge: an item that never recovers is a consumable wearing a wand's clothing, and players treat it that way.

Does my item need attunement?

Attunement is a budget, not a warning label. A character has three slots, so requiring one is you saying this item is worth a third of what someone can carry. Bonuses to attack, armour class or saving throws almost always require it. A bag that holds more than it should almost never does.

Can I make a cursed or sentient item?

Yes, and both at once. Sentient items have an alignment, senses, a way of communicating and something they want, and the interesting ones want something the party does not. There are fields for all of it, including what happens when the wielder and the item disagree.

Where do my saved items show up?

Straight away, without publishing: on the Shop Generator's shelves when they suit the shop, in the Loot Generator's item lists, where a table built by rarity or by setting can land on them, and in its treasure hoards and Campaign Forge's hoard roll once you give an item the treasure tables it appears on, and under My items in the Monster Creator's equipment picker, so a creature can carry it. Put it in a campaign adds the item you have open to the campaign you last opened in Campaign Forge. They are kept in this browser, so they are on this device only.

What happens after I publish?

It goes to the community gallery, where every submission is reviewed by a person before it appears. Once approved it is searchable in the gallery, can be handed to a creature in the Monster Creator's equipment picker, and can come up in the Loot Generator for everyone.
