Deathbed Testimony

Level 1 Necromancy (ritual)

by Wren Ashcombe

Deathbed Testimony

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Touch

Components: V, S, M (a silver coin laid on the corpse's tongue worth 1 gp)

Duration: Instantaneous

Description

You touch the corpse of a Humanoid that died within the last minute and draw one last statement out of it. The corpse answers a single question you ask aloud, speaking in a language it knew in life and using no more than a dozen words. It answers as truthfully as it understood the truth at the moment it died: a victim stabbed from behind in the dark can name the room, the hour and the shape of the blade, but not the face behind it. A creature that died asleep, charmed, or unconscious answers out of that confusion. This spell is a 1st-level stopgap, not a replacement for speak with dead. Each corpse can be questioned by Deathbed Testimony only once, it gives nothing if the body has been raised as undead or is missing its head, and if the minute has passed the coin on its tongue simply tarnishes black and the mouth stays shut.

At Higher Levels

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you may ask one additional question, and the corpse may have died within the last 10 minutes, for each slot level above 1st.
