Ferry of the Grey Reeds

Level 5 Conjuration

by Halvard Quince

Casting Time: 1 minute

Range: 60 feet

Components: V, S, M (a reed cut at midnight and a coin offered as the ferryman’s fare worth 1 gp, which the spell consumes)

Duration: 1 hour

Description

A flat-bottomed barge of grey reeds and black wood rises out of the ground, water, or air at a point you can see within range, and a silent, hooded ferryman takes up the pole at its stern. The barge is Large, roughly 20 feet long, and can carry up to eight Medium or smaller creatures, or four Large ones.

The ferry glides at a speed of 30 feet over any surface that will not hold a normal boat: open water, marsh, mist, loose sand, or empty air up to 10 feet above the ground. It cannot climb, and it will not cross ground that has never been traveled by the dead.

The ferryman obeys short spoken directions from any passenger, but it will not depart the near shore until the fare is placed in its palm. It never fights, never speaks, and cannot be commanded to harm anyone. If the ferryman is reduced to 0 hit points, or if the last passenger steps off and the barge is left empty for 1 minute, the spell ends and the ferry sinks into whatever lies beneath it.

At Higher Levels

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the ferry can carry four additional Medium creatures and its speed increases by 10 feet for each slot level above 5th.
