Reckoning of Hands

Level 7 Divination

by LedgerAndLantern

Casting Time: 10 minutes

Range: Touch

Components: V, S, M (a silver ledger-plate worth 500 gp, which the spell consumes)

Duration: Instantaneous

Description

You hold an object no larger than 10 feet in any dimension and press the silver plate against it. Names rise in the metal one after another, written in a hand you do not recognize.

You learn the chain of ownership of the object, reaching back up to 100 years, in reverse order. For each owner you learn their name, their species and apparent age at the time they held it, and the manner in which the object left their keeping: given, sold, lost, stolen, or taken from their body. You do not learn where any of these things happened.

You learn nothing of an owner who held the object while warded against divination by a spell of 6th level or higher, such as Nondetection. Those links appear as a smear of tarnish, and you know only that a gap exists and how long it lasted.

Finally, you learn the current distance and direction to the most recent owner other than yourself, provided that creature is alive and on the same plane of existence.

An object that has never been owned, such as a stone prised fresh from a cliff face, yields nothing at all. The plate is consumed either way.

At Higher Levels

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 8th level or higher, the chain of hands reaches back an additional 100 years for each slot level above 7th.
