Toll of the Threshold

Level 6 Abjuration

by Ondrea Falk

Casting Time: 1 minute

Range: Touch

Components: V, S, M (a coin bitten in half, or a key that opens nothing)

Duration: 8 hours

Description

You lay a binding across a door, gate, arch, or open passage no more than 20 feet wide and 20 feet high that you touch. The ward is invisible, though a creature that studies the threshold and succeeds on an Intelligence (Arcana) check against your spell save DC sees it as a faint line of tallied marks cut into the frame.

For the duration, the ward demands a toll of any creature that tries to cross without your permission. To pay, a creature must willingly leave behind something it is carrying and values: a named weapon, a holy symbol, treasure worth at least 100 gp, or an object of comparable personal worth, as the DM decides. A creature that pays crosses freely and may cross again in either direction until the spell ends.

A creature that crosses without paying must make a Charisma saving throw. On a failed save it takes 8d8 force damage and is pushed back to the side it came from, ending its movement for that turn. On a successful save it takes half as much damage and completes the crossing. A creature can be affected by the ward only once on each of its turns.

Objects left as toll are not consumed. They rest at the foot of the threshold and remain when the spell ends.

Damage

8d8 force damage

At Higher Levels

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 7th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 and the warded passage can be 10 feet wider for each slot level above 6th.
