Archmagister Ivo Sablecant is the court wizard of Duskvarren — the realm's chief arcane advisor, keeper of the border-wards, and the closest thing the young queen has to an honest counselor. Appearance
A tall, grey-bearded man in slate-blue robes stitched with orrery diagrams, hands ink-stained to the second knuckle. His face is very slightly too symmetrical, and in low candlelight the grey of his eyes has been observed to be a different grey than it was that morning.
Motives
To keep the border-wards lit for one more season, and to find the true name he was never given — without anyone learning why he needs it. He genuinely loves the realm he stole; that is the inconvenient part.
Personality
Answers every question a half-beat too late, as though translating it first. Unfailingly courteous, and courteous in exactly the same way to a scullion and to the queen — which the older courtiers find charming and the observant find strange. Quirk: he will not look into a mirror, and has had every reflective surface in the west tower turned to the wall or painted over with lampblack.
Voice
Dry, precise, faintly amused. Speaks in complete sentences and finishes them even when interrupted. When rattled, the borrowed accent thins and the vowels go flat and northern — the only tell he has never managed to sand off.
