Description

Quill-Three-Chimes carries the night post across the Ashmarch moor, the twenty-mile stretch no daylight rider will take twice. She is a kenku, small and rain-black, and in nine years of running letters she has never lost one. She works for a flat rate, accepts no cargo she cannot carry at a dead run, and crosses ground that has killed better-armed people because she has learned precisely which parts of the moor are merely frightening and which parts are actually hungry. If the party needs word c

Appearance

A small rain-black kenku in a courier's oilskin harness, brass message-tubes strapped along both forearms and a wingspan of ragged, road-worn feathers. One eye has clouded white from a moor-light she looked at a moment too long.

Motives

Deliver the letter. Every letter. She holds a private conviction that a message which never arrives is a small death, and she has been present for enough of the large kind out on the moor to take the small ones seriously.

Personality

Warm, watchful, and almost painfully polite. Like all kenku she has no voice of her own, so she speaks in stitched-together scraps of other people's: a tollkeeper's greeting, a child's laugh, a dying man's 'go on, then.' She knows exactly how that lands on strangers and apologizes for it, using an apology she borrowed from a priest twelve years ago.

Voice

A patchwork of stolen voices that switches mid-sentence; she may begin as a market crier and finish as a small girl. When frightened she falls back on one borrowed phrase, an old soldier's flat 'right. right. right.'
