Description
Twice a year the Crown assize comes to Emberhold Ford, and it comes wearing the face of Magistrate Ordrenn Vakk. He arrives on foot at dawn with two clerks and no guards, sets his folding bench in the market square, and hears every grievance the town has saved up since his last visit. He is scrupulously fair. He takes no bribe, shows no favor, and has ruled against the Crown itself on four occasions. He is also the reason two men are buried outside the fence, because the law he serves has a gall
Appearance
A spare, grey-skinned hobgoblin past sixty, close-shaved, in a black travelling coat kept immaculate by daily brushing. His hands are ink-stained to the second knuckle. He wears no chain or seal of office, only a plain iron ring, and he walks the whole circuit on foot because a magistrate arriving on horseback, he says, has already told the town something untrue.
Motives
The law is the only thing standing between people and each other, and it only works if it is applied without exception. He believes this sincerely, which is precisely what makes him dangerous. He wants no promotion, no estate, and no thanks. He wants the circuit walked and the ledger balanced.
Personality
Cold, courteous, and procedural to the marrow. He never raises his voice and never interrupts, which somehow makes him worse. His quirk: he keeps a small ledger of every debt owed to him, and favors go in it alongside coin, in the same hand, at the same weight. He will thank you for a cup of water and write it down.
Voice
Quiet, level, and unhurried, with the faintly bored precision of a man reading a form aloud. He addresses everyone as 'the party' or by their role in the matter at hand, never by name, until judgment is passed. Then, and only then, he uses your name.
